'Forged' carbon material

Hi,

I want to make this kind of material proceduraly but that’s not so easy.

My best start is a camouflage white/red/blue/green with color key mask to make zonning o different anisotropic material but it seems to squarish.

Do you have a clue on how acheive this?

I loooooove me some tasty looking carbon fiber, especially this forged chopped look. while not as structural as the woven type, its visually stunning.

I’m wondering if the flakes features would be of use in this? whats going to be the hard part is creating all the different varioations of each bit of CF and letting the app randomly choose and use.

I knwo there are bitmapped textures out there already, and they can be made to look good on smaller items like this, but yeah procedural is going to be tough. its has a VERY distinctive look.

I’ve played a bit for a hour but couldn’t get close. I think the start with the camouflage is actually a good one. I separated them to 4 different labels so using the camouflage as an opacity mask.

And for the scratch/rough look of the parts I tried to combine those with things like scratches/spots and other procedural textures to get the rough look but couldn’t really get there. Would already help if there was some sharpen node which could basically made the flake kind of things have more contrast and appear sharper.

I used this image of a Lamborghini mirror as base, personally I like matte looks better in general for composites but the gloss layer would be the least problem I think.

A couple of years ago, I created a concept visualization of the Lamborghini KeyFob. I have a very simple solution for you: you can download one from the KeyShot cloud library. If you edit it a little bit—just for example, adjusting the contrast, brightness of individual textures, and also the roughness—you’ll be ready to go. Here are the renders, and I think it looks close to the Lamborghini Carbon Forged Composite. But this solution is not procedural its using simple seamless texture.

I have no idea, but I just find it and it looks like the old one, or more like the old one. Interesting to be honest :slight_smile: Why they change it?

No idea why. Maybe just because almost all automotive brands did during/after covid since they had to do something. Sometimes I think it worked out fine, Renault, sometimes terrible (BMW). But well, matter of taste of course :slight_smile:

Today I looked a bit online and came across this YouTube video which explains how you can use the textures he created and you can buy for less than $5 on ArtStation or you can pay close to $10 to also get the Substance Designer files which procedurally create the textures. Might be interesting.

I’d love to be able to create a material like this in KeyShot. Unfortunately, it’s going to be tough, especially if you need it to be seamless/procedural. To get this to not look so flat, you’ll need anisotropic reflections aligned to each piece of carbon, which gives some pieces that very shiny appearance which change based on view angle. And I don’t know of a procedural texture in KeyShot that can create this kind of shape. The cellular one may get a little close, but not quite what you’re looking for.

You may be able to take an image texture of this from somewhere online and try to use a color to number to texture to isolate some of the bits of carbon, then use that as a mask to texture the index of refraction to make some appear much shinier.

Sorry, I know that’s a bit cryptic without visuals. But I hope it helps a bit.
